As late autumn transitions into early winter across the Ridge-and-Valley Appalachians, freezing levels drop and mountain ridge turbulence increases. The Appalachian Frost Run takes us on a scenic 138 NM mountain circuit crossing the Blue Ridge, the High Alleghenies, and the valleys of West Virginia before winter conditions lock in completely. Start at one of the three featured fields and put wheels down with a touch & go or full stop at the other two, then complete the circuit with a full stop back at your starting point. This streamlined Thursday night run emphasizes low-altitude short-distance VFR navigation, mountain pass awareness, and handling seasonal performance changes through river gaps and mountain basins. Because of the short hops between stops you'll be kept busy with transitions between the various phases of flight, configuring your plane from takeoff & climb to cruise to descent & landing, while handling frequency changes and radio calls, checking winds, and planning your approach. Keep your eyes outside and your ears tuned in for other club members in the pattern!
